DESCRIPTION OF VACANCY
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a friendly and inclusive school based within walking distance from Canterbury city centre.
As the Apprentice Teaching Assistant, your role will primarily be to support the class teacher in the teaching and welfare of children whilst demonstrating the school’s values in your approach.
Daily tasks will include helping maintain a safe working space, assisting with learning activities, and helping ensure good behaviours of pupils.
Alongside your day-to-day work you will complete the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard, which will serve as a solid foundation from which to build your teaching career.
Apprentice Teaching Assistant is required to carry out or be involved with the following tasks:
- Support the class teacher in the teaching and welfare of children.
- Ensure children attain the targets set under their individual educational programmes.
- Ensure the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe working environment.
- Making sure that equipment, resources and materials are set out on time and as per instructions.
- Assist teacher with learning activities ensuring health and safety and good behaviour of pupils.
- Be aware of and support differences to ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
- Provide clerical/admin support (e.g. typing, photocopying, display, collection and recording of money etc.)
- Undertake basic record keeping in respect of pupil learning, behaviour management, child protection etc.
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting.
- Implement behaviour management programmes.
- Contribute to the overall work/aims of the school.
- Undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings.
- Manage classroom activities safely ensuring that the physical learning space and the resources in it are conducive to pupil learning.
- Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy.
£4.30 per hour for the first 12 months then NMLW for the remainder of time on programme.
This is a term-time only role (39 working weeks and 44 paid weeks per year) and salary will be paid in 12 equal monthly payments of £522.30.

Working hours: Monday – Friday 8.00 – 3.15
Includes 45 minutes’ worth of unpaid breaks each day
20% paid time during working hours is given to complete training, referred to as “Off the Job Training”

Successful candidate should hold minimum grade C / 4 in GCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths
On the job training with the employer whilst working towards the Apprenticeship Standard – Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress.
Regular work based assessments/observations carried out by Kent Training & Apprenticeships Tutor Assessor, to determine competency and meet with Awarding Body standards.
As of 1st April 2021, the NMW for Apprentices is £4.30 per hour. This applies to 16 - 18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training.
