As a Teaching Assistant you will work across all areas of the school and curriculum. You will need to be personable, well-spoken and engaging with your approach to working with the students. Providing feedback to pupils in relation to their progress and achievement in order for them to realise their full potential.

The role will involve supporting both individuals as well as working within small groups of children. You will be passionate about your work, always willing to go the extra mile to support your colleagues.

Apprentice Teaching Assistant is required to carry out or be involved with the following tasks:

  • Support the teacher in behaviour management and keeping pupils on task
  • Ensure children attain the targets set under their individual educational programmes.
  • Ensure the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe working environment.
  • Be aware of and support differences to ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting.
  • Contribute to the overall work/aims of the school.
  • Undertake training and other learning activities and attend relevant meetings.
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy.
  • Work with individuals or small groups of pupils under the direct supervision of teaching staff and provide feedback to the teacher
  • Support pupils to understand instrcutions
  • Support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils
  • Support pupils in social and emotional well-being, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate
  • Prepare and clear up learning environment and resources, including photocopying, filing and the display and presentation of pupils work and contribute to maintaining a safe environment
  • Record basic pupil data
  • Support children’s learning through play
  • Assist with break-time supervision including facilitating games and activities
  • Assist with escorting pupils on educational visits
  • Support pupils using basic ICT
  • Invigilate exams and tests
  • Assist with pupils’ personal needs including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating, as well as help with social, welfare and health matters, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate
  • Physically assist pupils in activities (may involve lifting, where mobility is an issue)
  • Assist with pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/teacher


Weekly wage: £160.00 pro rata hours


37 hours per week, term-time only

8.30-4.00 daily, with 2 additional hours to be worked flexibly

30 minutes lunchbreak (unpaid)

20% paid time during working hours is given to complete training, referred to as “Off the Job Training”


  • Good standard of general education.

Level 1 or 2 Diploma (or equivalent) with proficient practical skills.

GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C or equivalent.


On the job training with the employer whilst working towards the Apprenticeship Standard – Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress.

Regular work based assessments/observations carried out by Kent Training & Apprenticeships Tutor Assessor, to determine competency and meet with Awarding Body standards.

Additional Detail

As of 1st April 2022, the NMW for Apprentices is £4.81 per hour. This applies to 16 - 18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.

The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training.

Important Information
