After applying for several apprenticeships without being shortlisted, Nick Rayner enrolled onto the Work Ready Extra programme. He wanted to polish his interview skills, get better at filling in application forms and gain certificates in functional skills.
His goal was to achieve a City & Guilds Level 1 in Customer Service and a Functional Skills at Level 1 in Maths and English. The NVQ required Nick to be in a work placement for 12 weeks – which he did in a plumbing supplies company.
Nick’s progress was not easy. He helps care for his two brothers who suffer from severe autism. Despite the difficulties he faced, Nick’s caring personality shone through. People working with him found him to be very reliable, always ready to lend a hand, and a good-humoured person to be around. In addition, his willingness to try things outside his comfort zone marked him out as a very promising job candidate.
Nick has now successfully completed his NVQ Level 1 in Customer Services, achieving his Functional Skill Level 1 in English and is due to take his Maths Level 1 later on this month.
Thanks to his perseverance and with help from KT&A, he has now been employed as a trainee Green Keeper at West Malling Golf Course.
